How Our Propane Fill Station Works
Filling your propane cylinder at Schilling Propane is quick and easy — no appointment needed. Here’s what to expect.
Step 1
Stop at the Office
Pull up to the office and come inside. Let our receptionist know the size and number of cylinders you need filled, and pay right at the counter — cash and card accepted.
Step 2
Head to the Fill Station
We'll point you to the filling station in the parking lot, where a service technician will meet you. Just hand over your cylinder(s) and we'll take it from there.
Step 3
Quick Safety Inspection
Before filling, our trained, certified technician visually inspects every cylinder for damage, excessive rust, expired certification dates, and unsafe valves. Cylinders that don't pass can't be filled — but we'll explain why and talk through your options, which can often be handled on-site.
Step 4
Fill Up and Go
Once your cylinder passes inspection, we fill it and hand it back for you to load. That's it — you're on your way.
Common Questions
Straight answers, before you ask.
Still have one we haven’t answered? Call the office — a real person picks up.
- At Schilling Propane, your time matters. Wait times rarely exceed a couple of minutes, and we work hard to keep it that way. During normal periods, a single technician handles incoming customers without delay — and when demand picks up, we add tech to the fill station to keep the line moving. Summer — grilling, RV travel, and general demand — is our busiest season, and the week leading up to Memorial Day is the single busiest stretch of the year, so we staff up accordingly. Whether it’s a quiet weekday morning or the height of grilling season, count on a quick stop and a friendly hand.
- DOT cylinders must be recertified 12 years after manufacturing, then every 5 years after that. Out-of-date cylinders can’t be filled until recertified — recertification is just $2.00 and we can take care of it for you. Cylinders 12+ years old may also need an OPD valve upgrade (required by law), which we can do on-site for an additional charge.
- All propane cylinders must pass a visual inspection before refilling. If your cylinder is expired, damaged, or shows excessive rust, we may not be able to refill it — but we can talk through your options. Our dispensers are operated by trained, certified staff.

Safely Transport
Transporting your propane cylinder safely
- Keep cylinders upright and secure so they can’t shift or roll — use tie-down straps, a propane cylinder stabilizer, or even a sturdy cardboard box or milk crate
- Avoid transporting cylinders in the passenger area. Best spots: the trunk of a sedan, the cargo area of an SUV, van, or hatchback, or the bed of a pickup truck
- Take cylinders straight home — never leave them in a hot vehicle
- Legal transport limit: “In an enclosed vehicle: no more than four 20-lb cylinders, no single cylinder larger than 45-lb capacity, and no more than 90 lbs of propane total.”
